Doctor Who: Extremis

This series is shaping up to be one of the most outstanding of the revived series of Doctor Who. This was Moffat at his mind bending best. There is definitely an A.I. theme shaping up with the emoji bots of Smile and the killer suits of Oxygen and now a whole world as a simulation that thinks it’s real. I really didn’t see that coming, but I loved the random number problem as proof. The continued Star Trek references were also appreciated. I enjoyed the practice versions of Earth basically being giant holodecks.

I also very much enjoyed the Pope now being part of the Doctor Who universe. I really enjoyed the moment where he popped in on Bill’s date.

We finally have confirmation of who supposed to be in the vault. I am sure many of you also suspected it was Missy. We don’t know exactly why she was set to be executed yet though. It could be any number of things, but I would like to know what finally brought it to that. Being the Master, I doubt the vault will be able to hold her for long, so I am sure we will see her again.

This is supposed to be the first of a three parter and I do like that the treatment of multi part stories has grown more sophisticated than it was at the start of the revived series. In series 9, we had a 3 parter whose parts all had different writers and totally different locations and tones, but still went together properly as a three parter. This set is looking like it could be similar as they are all different writers, too. We shall see next week (and the week after).

9.5/10
