Day 46: Henderson and Durham, North Carolina

We had only been four miles from the North Carolina border, so we entered first thing in the morning. We were heading toward our friends in Pittsboro, but checked out a few towns and cities on the way. The first was Henderson, a small town where we met some protesters. Check out the video for more information on the specifics of their protest. They did not advise us to live in the town, saying it had some economic problems and that it got both hurricanes and earthquakes:

Next we headed into Durham, part of the North Carolina tech triangle (also made up of Chapel Hill and Raleigh). It had what appeared to be an oddly neutral history of tobacco production. Neither of us have every been anywhere where trendy cafés combined so easily with old tobacco production buildings:

After checking out Durham, we went to a liquor store to buy some wine as we were going to stay with friends for the night (and of course, because wine is excellent). This is another one of those states with a, shall we say, complex relationship with alcohol. Fortunately it is less complex than Pennsylvania. Spirits are in their own special stores, ABC stores, i.e. Alcoholic Beverage Control, but the stuff we drink, cider and wine, are all easily available at places like Target, so that’s fine.

We proceeded on to Pittsboro, where we were warmly welcomed by Chris’s friend Dominic who also happened to marry an American woman named Jessica. We met their two children and had a very lovely Mexican meal. They have a large and lovely house and have kindly invited us to stay for a fair amount of time, so we will be here for at least a week in the hope that we can sort out Chris’s immigration woes.
